Rush Springs Training Grounds – Technical Water Pictures
Located just west of Rush Springs, Oklahoma, the training grounds owned by Washita Retrievers offers the technical water to mold your retriever into the perfect hunting companion or a titled Master Hunter. Designed by Jeff Chesnut, the water available on the training grounds offers everything needed to show a young dog basic concepts in an “obvious” way to make learning easier, to the most advanced concepts fit preparing for Master Hunt tests, HRC Grands, or Open and Amateurs field trial stakes.
Looking toward the south, from on top of the “Big Pond” dam, the heart of the technical water can be viewed. On the left (east) are the “East Slew” (closest), then the “Original Cline”, and then the “Concept Pond” furthest away in the line up of ponds. On the right (west) is the “West Slew”. While each of these ponds offers a variety of challenges, the possibilities are nearly limitless when you consider how all the ponds can be used together.
Above you see the “Big Pond” from the west. The Big Pond also offers many training opportunities including open water when you need fewer concepts and a less “busy” area, running water with shallow streams creating challenging shore breaking concepts at the north end, and islands with a row of willows between the two ends. The Big Pond is fed by shallow streams from the north and overflows into the West Slew.
No training grounds is complete without a pond specifically designed for young dogs to learn the concepts they need to progress to bigger and better things. The “Young Dog Concept Pond” shown above fills that need for us. Water T, Swim-by, De-cheating, Past the point – Over the point, Angle entries and re-entries, Rounded area for Water Tune-up drills. You name the concept and we can show it to a dog on this pond in a concise area and with precise points and banks so that the dog more easily and more quickly understands. The Young Dog Concept Pond is fed by a stream and overflows into the Concept Pond.
Interested in training with us?
We are very open with our training and would like to invite you, if you are a non-pro, to train with us. We have open training days most Saturdays that we are not running tests, and we would love to have you join us, train with us, and enjoy our training facilities with us. Currently, we communicate these days with e-mail sent out the Thursday before the Saturday training day. If you would like to be included, please send me e-mail and I'll make sure you get notified.
We have received interest in the past regarding training leases for our grounds including daily, annual, and winter from both professional and non-professional trainers. We are currently offering daily and multi-day training leases and considering the possibility of longer term training leases. For more information, see our Training Lease (link) page.
